Learn to Know Your Skin

February 2008

Is our skin so important? It seems a lifeless organ but it is actually an integral part of ourselves and very much alive. Its functions are important to our system. The four functions are:

1. Protection – The skin insulates our body against heat & cold, guards it against bacterial infection, acts as a cushion against blows.

2. Elimination – the skin throws off, through perspiration, poison’s coming from internal combustion such as mineral salts, carbonic acid, urea, etc. A skin that does not perspire is harmful.

3. Nourishment – the skin absorbs spirit or oily solutions as well as the fragrance and essential oils of certain plants.

4. Regulation – the skin regulates the temperature of the body. It is because we perspire through the sweat pores and because we lose heat through the capillaries that the temperature of our body remains constant.

When the sun is very hot, it is good to perspire and for the skin to redden. It means, the skin is nature’s thermostat. Thus, it is to your best of health to look after your skin properly. A neglected skin cannot perform its functions properly and vanity has nothing to do with it. So wash your skin everyday using the recommended soap for your skin type (do it morning and night) and nourish it with the appropriate skin care products that suit your skin condition (morning and night and if possible in the middle of the day).
