“Ate, Kuya Halina’t Magbasa” started last July 28, 2008 where the team of Splash Foundation, Inc. that includes Maurice P. Ligot, Aui T. Manalang, Melliza F. Tredes, May V. Morandarte, Joan V. Cabuhat, and 2 volunteers from ILP Parents decided to spend a one-on-one 30 minutes daily tutorial for 7 Interactive Literacy Program students categorized as non-readers and slow readers from Grades 1-3.
This project aims to help children develop reading comprehension using Marungko Approach in which alphabet letters are taught in its corresponding sounds or what is called mastery of sounds. The daily lesson starts with a 10-minute drill that requires listening to the alphabet sound and identifying the letters which the kids find it fun and enjoyable. The rest of the 20-minute is letting the child make and write down the words out of the alphabet learned.
The Marungko Technique or as the founder said, is the “phono-syllabic technique” that was first taught by a Malaysian educator, Nooraihan Ali, wife of a Malaysian Minister, to two teachers in Marungko, Bulacan. Using this approach in the mother tongue made it easier for the children to learn and understand the alphabet. Story telling and the drill exercise strengthen the child’s grasp and comprehension.
On the first week of tutorial, tutor and tutee established rapport with each other. Tutees were excited to learn and meet their tutors’ everyday.
SFI’s continues to support the Department of Education’s effort in improving the quality of education through its programs such as: the Interactive Literacy Program; Free use of Computer and Internet where students and teachers may avail; Library with reference books,
Teacher’s training in Basic Computer Education and many others.
