Thirty (30) children who had difficulty on the areas of Reading and Mathematics had a 30-minute, one-on-one tutorial, held every Friday with twenty (20) volunteer-tutors, in partnership with The Concerned Human in Academic Learning and Knowledge (CHALK) of Pamantasan Ng Lungsod Ng Valenzuela together with Mr. Richard O. Sanopao, a teacher from Canumay West Elementary School.
On the Ate, Kuya, Halina’t Magbasa, basic and mastery of reading were taught to Grades 1 to 3 including letter sounds and familiarity with construction of the words & phrases. For the Grades 4 to 6, reading comprehension was focused on understanding sentences & paragraphs.
Meanwhile, Ate, Kuya Halina’t Magkwenta focused on Mathematical facts and concepts. Counting numbers & arithmetic were taught in Grades 1 to 3 while basic fundamental operations and problem solving for the Grades 4 to 6.

Last March 31, 2015 after five (5) months of the tutorial program, Culmination Day of Ate, Kuya, Halina’t Magabasa at Magkwenta was conducted. PLV volunteer-tutors facilitated the activity to assess the children on the lessons that they had, through fun & exciting games. They prepared three (3) activities, Amazing Race (English), wherein the children will complete different challenges in every station and gather the clue to solve the puzzle.
Second was the Guess What Game (Mathematics). The kids need to complete the phrase by reducing the given fractions into its lowest term. Every number has a corresponding letter to complete the phrase I LOVE MY TEACHER.
Lastly, Celebrity Bluff Game (General Questions) was hosted by Ms. Jenny Suarez (former ILP beneficiary). The children are helped by the gangnams to give clues on the questions. Then, the contestants, ILP kids answer with fact na fact (true) or bluff na bluff (false). Through this set of questions, the ILP kids were very joyful & competitive on the game. Even the PLV volunteer-tutors enjoyed and learned on the activity.

The concluded activity was a manifestation of the great improvement of the reading ability and mathematical skills of the children. As observed, they were very competitive as they could give immediate answers to the set of questions given them.
It was indeed very fulfilling for the PLV volunteer-tutors to see the results of their efforts. As Ms. Patricia Ramirez (PLV volunteer-tutor) said, “being a tutor of different children is a very interesting and inspiring task.”
One of the tutees, Mark Ronnel Badenas (Grade 3) gave his gratitude to the tutors, “Thank you po mga tutors dahil tinuturuan po ninyo kami kahit makukulit kami, marami po kaming natutunan sa inyo. Mahal po namin kayo. Maraming salamat po.”
Thank you very much Ate, Kuya, Halina’t Magbasa at Magkwenta volunteer-tutors. May you continue to give us support in imparting your knowledge and learning, as we work together in improving the quality of education through our Interactive Literacy Program..
