Ang•Hortaleza Foundation Inc.’s program on education, Karunungan Kaunlaran ng Bayan, Interactive Literacy Program (ILP) recently celebrated its 10th year on May 2015.

The Interactive Literacy Program is a non-formal education with a structured curriculum that has been formulated to adapt to the cognitive needs of the children enrolled at the Ang•Hortaleza Foundation, Inc. Social Development Center (SDC).

Part of the ILP are other activities like Lakbay Aral; Ate, Kuya, halina’t magkwenta at magbasa tutorial; Quiz bee competition; summer activities as Arts and Craft; Mag-impok para sa Kinabukasan (children are each given a piggy bank where they save a portion of their baon); among others.

Classes started in May 2005 with 90 children referrals from Grades 1-6 from the Canumay West Elementary School (CWES), who were observed to need mentoring in reading and comprehension. Called “school after school,” the children attend classes either in the morning or afternoon at the CWES, and would come to SDC after.

Each class has 15 enrolled children, a manageable group, for a closer monitoring of their performance. The class is grouped according to their grade level and is therefore an extension of their class at the CWES. Assessment is done by conferring with the CWES teacher.
