Company Profile

Splash Corporation manufactures and markets personal care products and is the personal care arm of the Splash Group of Companies which manufactures and markets personal care products. The Splash Group is composed of wholly-owned Philippine companies with business interests in personal care manufacturing and marketing, international distribution, and recently, health and wellness products development and marketing.

Founded in 1985, Splash was able to grow from a Php12,000 backyard business into a Php4 billion enterprise through the vision, innovation, and commitment of its founders, Dr. Rolando B. Hortaleza and Dr. Rosalinda A. Hortaleza. Being consistently in the Top 300 corporations in the Philippines since 1998, the Company has established its reputation as one of the formidable players in the Philippine personal care industry. Splash carries the brands Extraderm, Maxi-Peel, and Skin White. It also carries one of the fastest growing skin care brands in the Philippines – Biolink.

In 2002, the Company invested in a Php400 million state-of-the-art manufacturing complex in Canumay, Valenzuela City which is expected to meet the Company’s capacity requirements in the medium-term.

The Company established the Splash Research Institute in 1997. Through state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, and a research staff of more than twenty (20) chemists, pharmacists and engineers, SRI carries out the design and development of innovative products and packaging systems, thereby keeping Splash at the forefront of the personal and health care industries. It strives to maintain a two (2)-year rolling pipeline of new products. SRI also ensures that all products made available to the market are backed up by rigid clinical tests to guarantee superior efficacy, safety, stability and over-all product excellence.

Splash has grown into a multi-billion peso company, with two of its core products, exfoliant and skin whiteners, dominating their segments with market shares of 86% and 41%, respectively, based on an AC Nielsen Philippine Retail Index Report dated June 2007. The Company is ranked sixth in the Philippine personal care industry, the only Filipino owned company in the top 10.

The Company aims to strengthen its presence in the personal care markets in the Asia-Pacific region and to gain a foothold in the affluent markets of Europe and North America through its health and wellness products.

To date, Splash has established market presence in over 30 countries through its distributors and local exporters. These countries include Algeria, Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam and the United States.

Milestone

Humble Beginnings
1985
  • Dr. Rolando Hortaleza and Dr. Rosalinda Ang-Hortaleza, got married after graduating from medical school and pooled together the cash gifts they received as wedding presents amounting to Php12,000. On 2 May 1985, using the Php12,000 as start-up capital, the couple paid Php5,000 to a cousin in exchange for a special formula for a cuticle remover. With the rest of the money, they bought an inventory of acetone, cuticle remover, amber bottles, and packaging materials to start a repacking business.
  • RBH Cosmetics, a backyard enterprise that packaged and distributed acetone, cuticle remover and cold wave lotion to neighborhood beauty parlors, was established.
1986
  • RBH Cosmetics became Hortaleza Cosmetics.
  • First year revenues amounted to a little over Php100,000.
1987
  • Hortaleza Cosmetics was renamed as Splash Cosmetics.
  • Splash made its first Php1 million in sales with Splash hair spray.
1988
  • Splash invested in low budget TV commercials using slides.
Challenging the Big Boys
1989
  • Splash launched All Natural Extract Facial Cleanser with avocado and cucumber variants – the first facial cleanser based on natural ingredients.
  • In August 1989, Splash Cosmetics started advertising Extract with celebrity endorsers.
  • Splash achieved Php40 million in sales.
1991
  • The name of the Company was changed to Splash Manufacturing Corporation.
Breaking the Glass Ceiling
1991
  • Splash launched Extraderm Exfoliant Plus, the first exfoliant astringent to be made available in retail outlets in the Philippines, giving birth to a new category in the Philippine personal care market – the exfoliant category.
1992
  • The Santiago plant was inaugurated.
  • The exfoliant market grew by 77% with Extraderm as the market leader.
1993
  • Splash entered the Asian markets such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Indonesia, initially through an informal network of overseas Filipino workers, and later through dealers.
1994
  • Splash went for higher visibility with well-known celebrity endorsers in big budget TV commercials.
1996
  • Local dealers brought Splash to the international markets such as Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain.
  • Splash hit the Php1 billion sales mark.
1997
  • Splash Research Institute and Splash Foundation, Inc. were established.
  • Extraderm posted its highest sales growth of 211.14% in 1997
  • Dr. Rolando Hortaleza received recognition for Outstanding Achievement in Entrepreneurship (Large Scale) during the 18th Agora Awards.
Transformation and Sustainability
1998
  • Splash hit the Php2 billion sales mark and made it to the Top 300 companies in the Philippines.
  • Splash entered the Oman and Qatar markets through dealers.
1999
  • Dr. Rolando Hortaleza received the 1999 TOYM Award (Ten Outstanding Young Men Award) for Entrepreneurship given by the Philippine Jaycees, the Gerry Roxas Foundation and the TOYM Foundation.
  • Splash launched the Skin White, which became the leading brand in the skin whitening category.
2001
  • Splash Manufacturing Corporation was renamed Splash Corporation.
2002
  • President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo led the inauguration of the Php400 million fully automated Canumay plant in Valenzuela.
  • Splash generated Php3 billion in sales.
  • Euromonitor ranked Splash number six (6) in the cosmetics and toiletries industry, the only Filipino company in the Top 10.
2003
  • The Manila Times bestowed Dr. Rosalinda Hortaleza, the Jose P. Rizal Award for Excellence in the field of Management Finance in ceremonies hosted by the Federation of the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
  • Former President Corazon Aquino led the inauguration of the Php40 million state-of-the-art SRI facility.
  • Splash invested Php150 million for the implementation of an enterprise resource planning system from SAP.
  • Splash launched another top-selling brand – Biolink.
  • Euromonitor, a noted industry intelligence provider, in one of its articles referred to Splash as “….the pride of the Filipino in the personal care industry.”
  • Maxi-Peel and Extraderm dominated the exfoliant market.
2005
  • Splash marked its 20th anniversary.
